Pickleball rotation generator: schedule for 4 to 32 players

In short

This free generator writes a pickleball rotation for doubles open play. Enter your players and courts and it lists every round: who partners whom, which court they play on and who sits out. It is an Americano-style rotation, so partners change every round and each player keeps their own score. Copy it to WhatsApp or print it. It runs in your browser.

One name per line, 4 to 32 players

Only used for the time estimate

Suggested for this group: 7

Flobit is a free app for amateur players with live scoring and tournaments, and pickleball is one of its ten sports.

How do I use the pickleball rotation generator?

Type your players, choose the courts and the game length, and press Generate. The rounds appear below the form.

  1. Add players. One name per line, from 4 to 32, or press Fill in names for Player 1, Player 2 and so on. Every name must be different.
  2. Choose the courts. One to eight. A court seats four, so extra courts stay empty.
  3. Choose the game length (to 11, 15 or 21). This only changes the time estimate.
  4. Set the rounds. The box starts at players minus one, up to 8, which is a long evening: see the time table below. Change it from 1 to 30.
  5. Press Generate. Each round shows the court, the two pairs and anyone sitting out. Shuffle again makes a different schedule with the same settings.
  6. Share it. Copy for WhatsApp pastes the schedule into a group chat, and Print gives a clean page for the court fence.

Your names stay in your browser. The generator writes the schedule, not the scores, so keep a sheet beside it. The pickleball scoring guide explains how a game is scored.

How is the rotation built, and will everyone partner everyone?

It uses the same engine as the padel Americano generator, because rotating doubles partners is the same problem in both sports. With 8, 12 or 16 players on enough courts, the rotation comes from a fixed design (a whist tournament) in which every pair of players partners exactly once over a full rotation and opposes twice. Any other number of players is built round by round: the players who have sat out least sit out next, then the rest are paired to repeat as few partners as possible.

The rulebook's round robin (section 15.B.4) has every singles player or doubles team play each other, so teams stay fixed. A rotation is different: you play with many partners and score alone. Choose it for open play and club nights, where levels differ. Use fixed teams when the event is a competition, and read the pickleball round robin guide for the choice.

What does a rotation look like for 8, 10 or 12 players?

Here are three schedules, one for each size. Letters are players. Each is one valid result; the generator gives you a different one each time.

8 players, 2 courts, 7 rounds. Everyone partners everyone once and opposes everyone twice.

10 players, 2 courts, 5 rounds. Two sit out each round, and everyone sits out exactly once.

12 players, 3 courts, first 6 of 11 rounds. Nobody partners twice in these six.

Stop a long rotation early: the first rounds of a full schedule never repeat a partner.

Should games go to 11, 15 or 21 in a rotation?

In a rotation, play to 11 unless you have a long slot. The USA Pickleball rulebook lists games to 11, 15 or 21 as tournament options, all won by 2 (15.C). A shorter game keeps the courts changing together and keeps everyone playing. The generator plans with these ranges for one round. They are the game lengths in Bounce's guide to how long a pickleball game takes, plus about 2 minutes to walk to the next court and meet the new partner. It is a rough planning range, not a promise.

Game toMinutes per round8 rounds
1117-27135-220 min
1527-42215-340 min
2142-62335-500 min

These are estimates for recreational doubles, and they assume nobody stops a game early. Bounce puts a game to 11 at 15 to 25 minutes, a game to 15 at 25 to 40 and a game to 21 at 40 to 60, so eight rounds is an evening of about 2 to 3.5 hours even at 11. If you have a shorter slot, set fewer rounds or agree a time limit on each round; a 12-minute cap per round, as Pickleheads suggests, makes eight rounds about 96 minutes.

Win by 2 has no cap in the rulebook, so one long game can hold a court while the others finish. Many groups agree a house rule before the first serve, such as a time limit, and say so on the schedule. That is a house rule, not part of the official rules.

What if I have 9, 10 or 11 players, or too many for the courts?

Someone sits out each round. A court seats four, so with 9 players on 2 courts one sits out, and with 10 players two sit out. The generator sits out the players who have sat out least, so counts never differ by more than one.

To make the sit-outs exactly equal, choose the rounds so that rounds times players sitting out per round is a multiple of your player count. That gives 9 rounds for 9 players on 2 courts, 5 rounds for 10 players on 2 courts, and 11 rounds for 11 players on 2 courts. Otherwise rank players by points per round played. With fewer than 8 players, or more people than courts, a fixed-team round robin may suit better.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pickleball rotation generator?

A tool that writes the schedule for a doubles open-play night: for every round, which four players share each court, who partners whom and who sits out. Partners change every round and players score individually. This one is free, runs in your browser, and handles 4 to 32 players on 1 to 8 courts.

How many rounds should a pickleball rotation have?

The generator suggests players minus one rounds, up to 8, which is a long evening (about 2 to 3.5 hours at games to 11, if games are not capped). With 8 players that is 7 rounds, and everyone partners everyone once. For a bigger group a full rotation is too long, so stop early. You can set any number of rounds from 1 to 30.

How do I rotate 10 players on 2 courts?

Set Rounds to 5, because the box starts at 8 for 10 players. Each round, 8 players play on two courts and 2 sit out, and everyone sits out exactly once. Partners change every round. The table on this page shows one valid schedule, and the generator makes a different one each time you press Shuffle again.

Does it work for singles?

No. It writes doubles rotations, four players to a court, with partners that change each round. For singles, use a round robin so every player meets every other. The round-robin generator on this site builds that schedule for 3 to 32 players.

Is the pickleball rotation generator free?

Yes. It is free, has no sign-up and no ads, and the names you type stay in your browser. It builds the schedule only, so keep scores on a sheet. Flobit scores pickleball in its app, but you don't need Flobit to use the generator.

How do I send the schedule to the group?

Press Copy for WhatsApp and paste into the chat. Each round is a bold heading followed by one line per court, with a Sitting out line when someone rests. Print gives a clean page for the court wall.
